Burnley - an industrial town in a pretty
landscape. |
Village of Barley on the Pendle Hill slopes. As
teenagers, my friends and I would hike through here on our way over Pendle
to Clitheroe. |
Pendle Hill in the distance. Were the witches out
this day? |
Townley Hall. I loved the long avenue of trees leading
up to the Hall, and the green grassy swards where we could run around. |
Burnley Town Hall. Its green dome was a prominent
sight on the skyline. The indoor swimming baths were close by. |
Townley Hall grounds - great place to play and picnic. |
Burnley Mall area in St James' Street - how
different this was from my memory. Also the changes to the market place
|
The Burnley viaduct in the distance. and a mill
chimney in the foreground - both reminders of Burnley's industrial history.
Missing was the tall tower of Watts clock .
|
Holy Trinity Church on the rise above the Mitre
(the junction of Accrington Road, Padiham Road, Westgate and Trafalgar
Street) No longer a practising church, but now seems to be a residential
building. The old gravestones are now carparking pads and footpaths. |
26 Westgate was my home from 1957 to 1964. Our neighbours
were Booths and Antcliffs. Six houses in the terrace had a private
back lane access with a bolted door. Opposite was the Masseys' Brewery,
and behind was Masseys ' water purification plant. |
Westgate Mill on Sandygate. The waste ground
we once played on, and built bonfires on is now a pretty park area. |
